FLAMES: the classic school game

Every Indian school kid has played it in the back of a notebook — two names, a lot of crossing out, and a giggle at the result. This FLAMES calculator plays the game for you and, unlike a quick result, shows every step: the common letters struck off, the count, and each round of counting around F-L-A-M-E-S until one letter is left. Perfect for settling arguments about whether you did it right!

How to play

  1. Type two names (first names are the classic way).
  2. Tap Play FLAMES and watch each step.
  3. Share the result with your friends — if you dare.

Worked example

RAHUL and PRIYA: the shared letters R and A are crossed out of both names, leaving H, U, L and P, I, Y — 6 letters. Counting 6 around F-L-A-M-E-S lands on S, so S goes. Counting 6 again from the next letter strikes F, then A, then L, then E — leaving M for Marriage 💍.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play FLAMES?
Write both names, strike out the letters they have in common (one for one), and count the letters left. Then go round the word F-L-A-M-E-S counting to that number and strike out the letter you land on. Keep going from the next letter until one is left — that is your result.
What does FLAMES stand for?
Friends, Lovers, Affection, Marriage, Enemies and Siblings. Some schools use “Love” and “Attraction” instead — the game works the same way.
Do spaces, surnames or capital letters matter?
Only letters count; spaces, dots and capitals are ignored. Using full names or just first names gives different results — most people play with first names.
What if no letters are left?
If the two names cancel out completely, there is nothing to count. By tradition that is treated as Friends.
Is FLAMES accurate?
Not at all — it is a playground game, just for laughs. Real relationships depend on respect and communication, not letter counts!
