Test your thumbnail before you publish
The thumbnail and title decide whether someone clicks — but you design them on a big screen, while viewers see them tiny on a phone. This thumbnail preview tester puts your image and title into a realistic video feed: a mobile card, a desktop grid next to other videos and a small sidebar slot. Check that your text is readable, the face is clear, the duration badge doesn't hide anything, and the title isn't cut off at the wrong word.
How to use it
- Choose your thumbnail image (ideally 1280 × 720).
- Type the title, channel name and duration.
- Switch between dark and light feeds and check each size.
Thumbnail checklist
- Three words or fewer of large, bold text.
- A clear face with emotion, or one strong object.
- High contrast — test in both dark and light mode.
- Nothing important bottom-right, where the duration badge sits.
Example
A food vlogger's thumbnail has “10 FOODS ₹500” in small yellow text. In the sidebar size the text is unreadable, so they enlarge it to “₹500 CHALLENGE” and move it to the top-left, away from the duration badge. Resize the final image to 1280 × 720 with the image resizer and keep it under 2 MB with theimage compressor.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a video thumbnail be?
1280 × 720 pixels (16:9) is the standard for YouTube and most video platforms, under 2 MB, in JPG or PNG. This preview crops your image to 16:9 exactly as feeds do, so you can spot text that gets cut off.
Why check a thumbnail at small sizes?
Most views come from phones, where thumbnails are shown small and next to a duration badge. Text that looks fine on your editing screen can be unreadable at that size — this preview shows the mobile, desktop and sidebar sizes side by side.
How long should my title be?
Feeds usually show about two lines — roughly 50–70 characters depending on the screen. The preview truncates your title the same way so you can keep the important words at the start.
Is my thumbnail uploaded?
No. The image is shown from your device only and never leaves your browser.
