What is GST?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is the single indirect tax charged on most goods and services sold in India. Since 22 September 2025 (“GST 2.0”) the structure is much simpler: most items are taxed at 5% or 18%, a short list of luxury and sin goods at 40%, gold and jewellery at 3%, and essentials such as fresh food at 0%. This GST calculator adds tax to a price, or works backwards from a GST-inclusive bill, and shows how it splits between the Centre and the state.

How to use the GST calculator

  1. Choose Add GST (you have the base price) or Remove GST (you have the final, tax-inclusive price).
  2. Enter the amount and pick the GST rate. Example items for the chosen rate appear underneath, or choose Other for any rate.
  3. Choose whether the sale is within your state (CGST + SGST) or to another state (IGST).

GST formulas

Add GST: GST = Price × Rate ÷ 100 · Total = Price + GST

Remove GST: Base price = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100) · GST = Total − Base price

Example

A laptop priced at ₹50,000 + 18% GST: GST = 50,000 × 0.18 = ₹9,000, so you pay ₹59,000. Bought within your state, the bill shows ₹4,500 CGST and ₹4,500 SGST; ordered from another state, it shows ₹9,000 IGST. Going the other way, a ₹1,050 bill that includes 5% GST has a base price of 1,050 ÷ 1.05 =₹1,000 and ₹50 of tax.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST on an amount?
Multiply the price by the GST rate. For ₹1,000 at 18%: GST = 1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹180, so the final price is ₹1,180. Within a state this is split into ₹90 CGST and ₹90 SGST; for inter-state sales it is ₹180 IGST.
How do I remove GST from a GST-inclusive price?
Divide the inclusive price by (1 + rate ÷ 100). For ₹1,180 including 18% GST: 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 base price, and GST = ₹180. Simply taking 18% of ₹1,180 (₹212.40) is a common mistake.
What are the new GST rates after GST 2.0?
From 22 September 2025 most goods and services fall into two main slabs — 5% and 18% — with a special 40% rate for luxury and “sin” goods such as large cars and aerated drinks. Most items in the old 12% slab moved to 5%, and most 28% items moved to 18%. Gold stays at 3%. Tobacco products continue at their earlier rates plus compensation cess until that cess ends.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
For a sale within one state, GST is shared equally between the Centre (CGST) and the state (SGST, or UTGST in union territories). For a sale from one state to another, the whole tax is IGST, collected by the Centre. The total rate is the same either way.
