How to use it

  • What percent is X of Y: see what share one number is of another.
  • Percentage change: compare an old and new price, salary or score.
  • Increase/decrease by %: apply a hike or a discount to a number.
  • Marks and CGPA: convert exam scores into a percentage.

Percentage formulas

X% of Y = Y ร— X รท 100

X as a % of Y = X รท Y ร— 100

% change = (New โˆ’ Old) รท Old ร— 100

Y increased by X% = Y ร— (1 + X รท 100)

Examples

  • A โ‚น1,200 shirt with a 15% discount costs 1,200 ร— 0.85 = โ‚น1,020.
  • A salary rising from โ‚น40,000 to โ‚น46,000 is a (6,000 รท 40,000) ร— 100 = 15% hike.
  • Scoring 437 out of 500 is 87.4%.

Quick mental tricks

  • 10% โ€” move the decimal one place left (10% of 2,450 = 245).
  • 5% โ€” half of 10%. 1% โ€” move the decimal two places.
  • X% of Y = Y% of X โ€” 8% of 50 is the same as 50% of 8, which is 4.

For returns that grow over many years, use the compound interest calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 18% of 2,450 = 2,450 ร— 18 รท 100 = 441.
How do I calculate percentage increase or decrease?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 is (100 โˆ’ 80) รท 80 ร— 100 = 25% increase. A negative answer means a decrease.
How do I calculate my marks percentage?
Divide the marks you obtained by the total maximum marks and multiply by 100. If you scored 437 out of 500, your percentage is 437 รท 500 ร— 100 = 87.4%.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
CBSE recommends multiplying your CGPA by 9.5. A CGPA of 8.6 equals about 81.7%. Universities may use their own formula, so check your marksheet or university rules for official conversions.
Why is a 50% rise followed by a 50% fall not back to the start?
Because the second percentage is applied to a different base. โ‚น100 up 50% is โ‚น150; โ‚น150 down 50% is โ‚น75. Percentage changes multiply rather than add.
