    Fraction calculator

Fractions show up in school maths, recipes, measurements and exams. This fraction calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides fractions, mixed numbers and decimals, simplifies the answer, converts it to a mixed number and a decimal, and shows each step — so it's useful for checking homework, not just getting the answer.

    How to use it

    1. Type the first fraction (for example 3/4 or 2 1/2).
    2. Choose +, −, × or ÷.
    3. Type the second fraction. The answer and steps appear instantly.

    Rules at a glance

    a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd · a/b × c/d = ac/bd · a/b ÷ c/d = ad/bc

    Example

A recipe needs 2 1/4 cups of flour, and you already added 3/4 cup. 9/4 − 3/4 = 6/4 = 1 1/2 cups more. Scaling the whole recipe? Use the recipe scaler. Working with ratios instead? Try the ratio calculator.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Find a common denominator, convert both fractions, then add the numerators. ½ + ⅓: the common denominator is 6, so 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. The calculator shows these steps.
    How do I divide fractions?
    Multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction: (3/4) ÷ (2/3) = (3/4) × (3/2) = 9/8 = 1⅛.
Can I enter mixed numbers and decimals?
Yes. Type a mixed number with a space, like 2 1/4, or a decimal like 0.75 — it is converted to a fraction automatically.
    What is a simplified fraction?
A fraction whose numerator and denominator have no common factor other than 1. 8/12 simplifies to 2/3 by dividing both by their HCF, 4.
