Square root calculator

Whether you're simplifying surds for a Class 9 exam, working out the side of a square plot from its area, or checking a cube root, this square root calculator gives the decimal answer to 10 places and, for whole numbers, the simplified radical form. It also handles cube roots, higher roots and negative numbers.

How to use it

  1. Enter a number.
  2. Choose square, cube or a higher root.
  3. Read the decimal value and the simplified form.

Example

A square plot has an area of 2,025 sq ft. Its side is √2,025 = 45 ft, a perfect square. A water tank holding 27,000 litres (27 m³) in a cube shape has sides of ∛27 =3 m. And √50 simplifies to 5√2 ≈ 7.0711. For powers, use theexponent calculator, or do it all in thescientific calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I simplify a square root?
Take out the largest perfect square factor. √72 = √(36 × 2) = 6√2. The calculator does this automatically for whole numbers.
What is a perfect square?
A number whose square root is a whole number: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25… For example 144 = 12², so √144 = 12.
Can I find cube roots and other roots?
Yes — choose the root (2 for square, 3 for cube, or any n). The n-th root of x is the number that, multiplied by itself n times, gives x. Odd roots of negative numbers are allowed: ∛(−27) = −3.
What is the square root of a negative number?
It is not a real number. In complex numbers √(−9) = 3i, where i = √(−1). The calculator shows this form.
