Ratio calculator

Ratios are everywhere — sharing profit between partners, mixing concrete or paint, scaling a recipe, or reading a company's debt-to-equity. This ratio calculator does three jobs: it simplifies any ratio (including decimals and three or more parts), splits an amount according to that ratio, and solves proportions to find a missing value.

How to use it

  1. Type a ratio such as 3:5 or 1.5:2.25 to see it simplified.
  2. Enter an amount to divide it in that ratio.
  3. Use the proportion box for “if 4 cost 200, what do 7 cost?” questions.

Example

Three partners invest ₹2 lakh, ₹3 lakh and ₹5 lakh — a ratio of 2 : 3 : 5. A profit of ₹1,00,000 is shared as ₹20,000, ₹30,000 and ₹50,000. For a concrete mix of 1 : 2 : 4 (cement : sand : aggregate), 7 parts in all, each 50 kg bag of cement needs 100 kg of sand and 200 kg of aggregate. Need percentages instead? Use thepercentage calculator or the fraction calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I simplify a ratio?
Divide every part by their highest common factor. 12 : 18 : 30 → divide by 6 → 2 : 3 : 5. Decimals are first multiplied up to whole numbers: 1.5 : 2.25 becomes 150 : 225, which simplifies to 2 : 3.
How do I split an amount in a ratio?
Add the parts, divide the amount by that total, and multiply by each part. ₹1,000 in the ratio 2 : 3 gives 1,000 × 2/5 = ₹400 and 1,000 × 3/5 = ₹600.
How do I find a missing value in a proportion?
For a : b = c : x, cross-multiply: x = b × c ÷ a. If 4 kg costs ₹200, then 7 kg costs 200 × 7 ÷ 4 = ₹350.
What is the difference between a ratio and a fraction?
A ratio compares parts with each other (boys : girls = 2 : 3); a fraction compares a part with the whole (boys are 2/5 of the class).
