Frequently asked questions

How do I find the PIN code of my area?
Choose your state and district, then type the name of your locality or post office. The list shows each post office with its six-digit PIN code. If you already have a PIN, type it in the search box to see which post offices and areas it covers.
What do the six digits of a PIN code mean?
The first digit is the postal region (for example 1 for Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and nearby; 4 for Maharashtra, Goa and central India; 6 for Kerala and Tamil Nadu). The first two digits together identify the sub-region or postal circle, the third digit the sorting district, and the last three the delivery post office.
What are HO, SO and BO?
A Head Office (HO) is the main post office of a division, a Sub Office (SO) handles a town or locality, and a Branch Office (BO) is a small office, usually in a village, linked to a sub office. Several post offices can share one PIN code.
Why does one PIN code have many post offices?
A PIN identifies the delivery area of a post office; branch offices in nearby villages usually share their sub office’s PIN. So one PIN can list a town’s sub office and several villages.
How current is this list?
It comes from the All India Pincode Directory published by the Department of Posts on data.gov.in. PIN codes rarely change, but new offices open occasionally — check with India Post for very recent changes.
