Is 2028 a leap year? What about 1900 or 2100? This leap year checker answers instantly and explains which rule applies, shows the next leap year, the weekday of 29 February, and lists everyleap year in any range you choose — handy for homework, planning a 29 February event, working out someone's real number of birthdays, or checking date logic in a program.

How to use it

  1. Type a year to check it.
  2. Set a range to list all leap years in it.

The rule

Leap year if divisible by 4 — unless divisible by 100, then only if divisible by 400

Example

2028 divides by 4 and isn't a century year, so it's a leap year with 366 days, and 29 February 2028 is a Tuesday. 2100 divides by 4 and by 100 but not by 400, so it is not a leap year. Between 2000 and 2100 there are 25 leap years. Find the weekday of any date with theday of the week finder.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a year is a leap year?
A year is a leap year if it divides exactly by 4 — except century years, which must also divide by 400. So 2024 and 2028 are leap years, 1900 and 2100 are not, but 2000 was.
Why do we have leap years?
Earth takes about 365.2422 days to go round the Sun. Adding a day every 4 years (365.25) slightly over-corrects, so the Gregorian calendar skips 3 leap days every 400 years to keep the seasons in place.
When is the next leap year?
After 2024, the next leap years are 2028, 2032 and 2036. The page shows the next leap year from today automatically.
What if I was born on 29 February?
People born on 29 February (“leaplings”) have a true birthday only every four years. In common years, most celebrate on 28 February or 1 March; for legal age purposes, rules differ by country.
