Currency converter for India

Planning a trip to Dubai, paying for a course in the UK, or checking what a salary in dollars means in rupees? Thiscurrency converter uses the day's official reference rates for over 30 currencies, including the Gulf currencies most Indian families deal with. Because the rate you actually get from a bank or card is always a little worse, you can add a typical margin to see a realistic figure.

How to use it

  1. Enter the amount and choose the currencies to convert from and to.
  2. Pick your bank or card's margin for a realistic figure.
  3. Tap Swap to convert the other way.

Pegged Gulf currencies

CurrencyFixed to the US dollar
UAE dirham (AED)1 USD = 3.6725 AED
Saudi riyal (SAR)1 USD = 3.75 SAR
Qatari riyal (QAR)1 USD = 3.64 QAR
Omani rial (OMR)1 OMR = 2.6008 USD
Bahraini dinar (BHD)1 BHD = 2.6596 USD

Example

If the reference rate is ₹96.40 per dollar, ₹1,00,000 converts to about $1,037. Paying by a card with a 3.5% foreign-currency markup, you'd effectively get about $1,001 — around $36 less. On a trip, those margins add up, so compare forex cards and cards with low markups. Converting units rather than money? Use theunit converter.

Frequently asked questions

Where do these exchange rates come from?
From the European Central Bank’s daily reference rates (via the open Frankfurter API), updated once every working day. Gulf currencies such as the UAE dirham and Saudi riyal are officially pegged to the US dollar, so they are derived from the dollar rate at their fixed pegs.
Why does my bank give a different rate?
Reference rates are mid-market rates. Banks, card networks and money changers add a margin (often 1–5%) and sometimes a fee. Use the “bank margin” box to see roughly what you will actually get.
How do I send money abroad cheaply?
Compare the total amount the recipient receives, not just the advertised rate. Under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, Tax Collected at Source may apply to larger remittances depending on the purpose — check with your bank.
Does it work offline?
The last rates fetched are saved on your device, so the converter still works without a connection — it shows the date of the rates it is using.
