Discount calculator

Big Billion Days, Diwali sales, end-of-season offers — every sign shouts a percentage, but how much do you really pay? This discount calculator works out the sale price and your saving, handles stacked discounts such as “extra 10% with a bank card” (including the maximum-discount cap that bank offers usually have), and can work backwards from a sale price to the original MRP.

How to use it

  1. Enter the original price and the main discount.
  2. Add any extra discount and its rupee cap, if the offer has one.
  3. To check a “was ₹X” claim, enter the sale price in the last box.

Example

A jacket with an MRP of ₹2,000 is on 30% off, with an extra 10% bank offer. 30% off gives ₹1,400, and 10% off that is ₹1,260 — you save ₹740, an effective 37% discount, not 40%. If the bank caps its discount at ₹100, you pay ₹1,300 instead. Need to work out GST on a price? Use theGST calculator; for general percentages, thepercentage calculator.

Shopping tips

  • Compare the final price across sites, not the discount percentage — MRPs can be inflated.
  • Read the bank offer's minimum order value and cap before planning a purchase around it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it from the price. 30% off ₹2,000 saves ₹600, so you pay ₹1,400.
Is “50% + 20% off” the same as 70% off?
No. The second discount applies to the already reduced price. 50% off ₹1,000 is ₹500, and 20% off that is ₹400 — a total of 60% off, not 70%.
Is GST charged before or after the discount?
GST is charged on the price after a discount shown on the invoice. Online prices in India usually already include GST.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). If ₹1,400 is after 30% off, the original price was 1,400 ÷ 0.7 = ₹2,000. Use the “Find original price” box.
