Plan your road trip budget
Weekend trip to the hills, a family drive to your hometown or a long ride with friends — the first question is always “how much will petrol cost?”. This fuel cost calculator works out the litres you'll need and the total cost for a one-way or return trip, adds tolls and parking, and splits the bill per person. It works for petrol, diesel, CNG and even electric vehicles.
How to use it
- Enter the one-way distance (from Google Maps) and choose round trip or one way.
- Enter your vehicle's real mileage and today's fuel price in your city.
- Add the number of people and any tolls to see each person's share.
The formula
Fuel (litres) = Distance ÷ Mileage · Cost = Fuel × Price per litre
Example
Four friends drive from Bengaluru to Coorg and back — about 260 km each way. Their SUV does13 km/l on the highway, diesel costs ₹90/l and tolls come to ₹600. Fuel: 520 ÷ 13 = 40 litres = ₹3,600; with tolls the trip costs ₹4,200, or ₹1,050 each.
Tips to save fuel
- Keep tyres at the recommended pressure — under-inflated tyres can cut mileage noticeably.
- Cruise steadily at 60–80 km/h; hard acceleration and high speeds burn more fuel.
- Check your real mileage with the mileage calculator.
