Calculate your vehicle's real mileage

The mileage printed in the brochure is rarely what you get on Indian roads. The reliable way to know yourreal mileage is the full-tank method — and this mileage calculator does the maths, showing km per litre, litres per 100 km, cost per kilometre and what fuel costs you every month. It works for bikes, scooters, cars and CNG vehicles (enter kg instead of litres).

The full-tank method

  1. Fill the tank to full at a petrol pump and reset the trip meter (or note the odometer).
  2. Ride or drive as usual until you need fuel again.
  3. Fill to full again at the same pump. Enter the km driven and the litres just added.

Formula

Mileage (km/l) = Distance ÷ Fuel used · Cost per km = Fuel price ÷ Mileage

Example

A scooter covers 210 km between two full fills and takes 4.6 litres. Mileage = 210 ÷ 4.6 = 45.7 km/l. With petrol at ₹103, each km costs ₹2.25, so 900 km a month costs about₹2,030. Repeat over a few fills and average them for the most accurate figure.

How to improve mileage

  • Service on time and keep the air filter clean.
  • Maintain tyre pressure and avoid carrying unnecessary weight.
  • Planning a trip? Estimate its cost with the fuel cost calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my bike or car mileage?
Fill the tank to full and note the odometer reading. Drive normally until the next refill, fill to full again and note the litres added and the new reading. Mileage = kilometres driven ÷ litres added.
Why is my mileage lower than the company claim?
Claimed (ARAI) figures come from standardised lab tests. City traffic, AC use, heavy loads, low tyre pressure and aggressive driving all reduce real-world mileage — 15–25% lower is normal.
What is a good mileage?
Roughly: 100–125 cc commuter bikes 50–65 km/l, scooters 40–50 km/l, small petrol cars 15–20 km/l, diesel SUVs 12–16 km/l. Compare your own readings over time rather than against others.
What is litres per 100 km?
It is the fuel used to drive 100 km — the measure used in many countries. 15 km/l equals 6.7 litres per 100 km. Lower is better.
