Dead pixel test

Bought a new phone, laptop, monitor or TV — or a second-hand one? Before the return window closes, check the screen for dead pixels (always black) and stuck pixels (always red, green or blue). Thisdead pixel test fills your whole screen with solid colours one after another, so a faulty pixel stands out against the background. It takes about a minute and works on any device with a browser.

How to use it

  1. Clean your screen and turn the brightness up.
  2. Tap Start full-screen test.
  3. On each colour, scan the screen slowly from corner to corner. Tap or press → for the next colour.
  4. Press Esc (or tap the last colour) to exit.

What to look for on each colour

Screen colourReveals
BlackStuck or “hot” pixels that stay lit
WhiteDead (black) pixels and dust under the glass
Red, green, blueSub-pixels that are dead or stuck on another colour
GreyUneven backlight, clouding and banding

Example

On a new laptop you spot a tiny dot that is green on the black screen and invisible on the green screen: that's a stuck green sub-pixel. A dot that's black on white, red, green and blue is a dead pixel. Note its position and report it to the seller or brand with a photo.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dead pixel?
A dead pixel stays black on every colour because it receives no power. It is easiest to spot on the white, red, green and blue screens. A stuck pixel, by contrast, stays one colour (often red, green or blue) and shows up best on the black screen.
How do I check a new phone, laptop or TV for dead pixels?
Clean the screen, open this test in full screen at maximum brightness and slowly look across the whole display on each colour. Check corners and edges too. Doing this soon after purchase matters, because return windows for screen defects are often short.
Can a stuck pixel be fixed?
Sometimes. Stuck (coloured) pixels can recover on their own, and gently massaging the spot with a soft cloth while the screen is off sometimes helps. Dead (black) pixels usually can’t be repaired. We deliberately don’t offer rapidly flashing “pixel fixer” animations, which can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy.
How many dead pixels are acceptable under warranty?
It depends on the manufacturer’s pixel policy. Many brands only replace a monitor or laptop once a certain number of dead or bright pixels appear, while premium models may have zero-defect policies. Check your warranty terms and report defects quickly.
Does this work on phones?
Yes. Tap “Start full-screen test” and tap anywhere to move to the next colour. If your phone’s browser doesn’t support full screen, rotate to landscape and hide the address bar by scrolling.
