Compress a PDF for online forms

Exam, job, passport and scholarship portals in India often cap uploads at 100 KB, 200 KB or 1 MB, while a phone scan of a certificate can easily be 5 MB. This PDF compressor shrinks the file right on your phone or computer. Choose a quality level, or simply type the size limit and let the tool find the best quality that fits. Your documents are never uploaded.

How to compress a PDF

  1. Choose your PDF.
  2. Pick Quality level, or Target size and enter the limit in KB.
  3. Optional: tick Black & white for text documents.
  4. Tap Compress PDF, check the result and download it.

How it works

Each page is redrawn at a sensible resolution and saved as an optimised JPEG image inside a new PDF. Lower resolution and quality mean smaller files; the levels below are tuned for documents you need to read on screen.

LevelResolutionBest for
High quality150 DPIPrinting, photos
Recommended120 DPICertificates, scans
Smallest96 DPIStrict upload limits
Extreme72 DPIVery strict limits — check readability

Example

A 3-page scanned caste certificate is 4.8 MB, but the portal allows only 500 KB. With Target size = 500 KB the tool tries High quality (too big), then Recommended — about 420 KB — and stops there, keeping the sharpest version that fits. Zoom into the result to confirm small text is readable before uploading.

Too many pages? Remove extras first with Delete PDF Pages. Compressing photos instead? Use the image compressor.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce a PDF to under 200 KB or 500 KB?
Choose your PDF, select “Target size”, enter the limit (for example 200 KB) and tap Compress. The tool tries progressively stronger settings until the file fits, and tells you if the limit can’t be reached without making pages unreadable.
Why is the text no longer selectable after compressing?
To shrink scanned documents and photos, each page is re-saved as an optimised image. That makes the file much smaller but turns text into a picture. If you need selectable text, use the High quality level or keep the original for that purpose.
Which level should I choose?
“Recommended” suits most scanned documents and certificates. Use “Smallest” or “Extreme” for strict upload limits, and check that small print is still readable. Turn on black & white for text documents to save even more.
Why did my PDF hardly get smaller?
PDFs made from text (like a Word export) are usually already compact. Compression helps most with scanned pages and photos. If the result would be larger, the tool keeps the original-quality version instead.
Is my document uploaded?
No. Compression happens entirely in your browser. Your PDF never leaves your device.
