Free online word counter

Whether you're writing an essay with a word limit, a tweet that must fit in 280 characters, an Instagram caption or a meta description for your blog, this word and character counter shows you everything at a glance. Counts update live as you type or paste, and the length-limit bars turn red the moment you go over. It works with Hindi and other Indian languages, and counts emoji correctly.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. Read the live counts for words, characters, sentences and paragraphs, plus reading and speaking time.
  3. Use the buttons to change case, tidy up extra spaces, copy the result or clear the box.

How the counts work

  • Words: runs of letters or digits; apostrophes and hyphens inside a word don't split it.
  • Characters: what you see on screen, including spaces — an emoji like 👋🏽 counts as one.
  • Sentences: text ending in . ! ? or the Hindi danda (।).
  • Paragraphs: non-empty lines.

Reading time = Words ÷ 238  ·  Speaking time = Words ÷ 130 (minutes)

Example

A 1,200-word blog post takes about 5 minutes to read and roughly 9 minutes to read aloud. A typical school essay of 500 words is about 2 minutes of reading.

Frequently asked questions

How does the word counter count words?
A word is any run of letters or numbers, so “don’t” and “e-mail” count as one word each. Hindi and other Indian-language words are counted correctly too. Punctuation and emoji on their own are not counted as words.
Are spaces counted as characters?
The main character count includes spaces, as Twitter/X, Instagram and most forms do. The “without spaces” figure is also shown for assignments and forms that ask for it. Emoji and Hindi conjunct letters count as one character each.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of about 238 words per minute; speaking time assumes 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for speeches and YouTube voice-overs.
Is my text saved or uploaded?
Your text never leaves your device. It is saved only in your own browser so you don’t lose a draft if you close the tab. Tap “Clear” to remove it.
What is keyword density?
Keyword density is how often a word appears compared with the total number of words, shown as a percentage. Writers use it to avoid overusing a word; common words like “the” and “and” are ignored.
