Free online typing speed test

How fast can you type? This typing speed test measures your speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy as you type a short passage. Choose a 30-second sprint or a full 60-second test. Correct letters turn green, mistakes turn red, and your live WPM updates as you go. It's useful practice for job applications, data entry roles and government exam skill tests — or just for bragging rights.

How to take the test

  1. Choose 30 or 60 seconds.
  2. Tap the box and start typing the highlighted text. The timer starts on your first key.
  3. Fix mistakes with backspace if you like — accuracy counts every wrong key you press.
  4. When time runs out you'll see your WPM, accuracy and personal best.

How speed and accuracy are calculated

WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ total keystrokes × 100

Example

In a 60-second test you press 300 keys, 15 of them wrong, and finish with 275 correct characters on screen. Your speed is 275 ÷ 5 = 55 WPM and accuracy is 285 ÷ 300 = 95%.

Tips to improve

  • Accuracy first: slow, correct typing builds the muscle memory that later becomes speed.
  • Don't look down: rest your index fingers on F and J (the keys with bumps).
  • Sit well: straight back, relaxed shoulders, wrists floating above the keyboard.
  • Practise daily: 10 minutes a day beats an hour once a week.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed?
The average adult types around 35–45 words per minute (WPM). 50–60 WPM is good for office work, 70+ WPM is fast, and professional typists often reach 80–100 WPM with high accuracy.
How is WPM calculated?
A “word” is standardised as 5 characters, including spaces. Net WPM = (correctly typed characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. So typing 250 correct characters in one minute equals 50 WPM.
What typing speed is needed for government exams?
Many Indian typing tests (such as SSC CHSL/CGL skill tests) ask for about 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi, typically with an accuracy requirement. Check the official notification for your exam.
How can I type faster?
Learn touch typing so you don’t look at the keys, keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF JKL;), focus on accuracy first and practise for 10–15 minutes a day. Speed comes naturally once accuracy is high.
Does this test work on mobile?
Yes, you can type on your phone’s keyboard. Phone results are usually lower than on a physical keyboard, so compare scores on the same device.
