Remove distractions, straighten your composition or make a photo fit a specific shape. This crop image tool lets you drag a crop box with your finger or mouse, lock it to popular ratios โ€” square for profile pictures, 4:5 for Instagram, 9:16 for Stories and 16:9 for YouTube โ€” and rotate or flip the photo first. The pixels you keep aren't recompressed more than needed, and your photo never leaves your device.

How to use it

  1. Choose a photo.
  2. Pick an aspect ratio (or Free), and rotate or flip if needed.
  3. Drag the box to position it; drag the corner handles to resize. On a keyboard, use the arrow keys.
  4. Tap Crop and download.

Aspect ratios explained

Aspect ratio = width รท height ยท 16:9 = 1.78 ยท 4:5 = 0.8 ยท 1:1 = 1

Example

From a 4000 ร— 3000 photo, the largest 1:1 crop is 3000 ร— 3000 pixels. The largest9:16 crop is 1688 ร— 3000 โ€” a narrow vertical slice, perfect for a WhatsApp status or Instagram Story. Resize it afterwards to 1080 ร— 1920 with the image resizer to match the platform exactly.

Tips for better crops

  • Use the rule of thirds grid: place faces or the horizon on the guide lines.
  • Leave a little space in front of a person's face in the direction they're looking.
  • For passport and visa photos, use the passport photo maker with its face guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop a photo on my phone?
Choose the photo, then drag the box to move it and drag any round corner handle to resize it. Pick a ratio such as 1:1 to keep the box square. Tap โ€œCropโ€ and download the result.
What aspect ratio should I use?
1:1 for Instagram posts and profile pictures, 4:5 for tall Instagram posts, 9:16 for Stories, Reels and WhatsApp status, and 16:9 for YouTube thumbnails and presentations.
Does cropping reduce image quality?
No. Cropping only removes the outer area; the pixels you keep are exactly the same. The saved file is smaller because it contains fewer pixels.
Can I rotate a sideways photo?
Yes โ€” use the rotate buttons before cropping. Photos taken on phones are also automatically turned the right way up using the orientation saved by the camera.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Cropping happens entirely in your browser, so your photo stays on your device.
