Practise for the government typing test
Clearing the skill test is the last step to many central and state government jobs — SSC CHSL for LDC and JSA posts, the CGL Data Entry Speed Test, and typing tests for courts, banks and state secretariats. Thistyping test recreates the format: a formal passage, a fixed time, no copy-paste, and evaluation by key depressions per hour (KDPH) with full and half mistakes. Practise daily in English or Hindi and watch your speed and accuracy improve.
How to use it
- Choose the test format and a passage.
- Start typing in the box — the timer starts with your first key.
- Keep going until time runs out (or tap Submit), then study your mistakes word by word.
Speed requirements at a glance
| Test | Requirement | Time |
|---|
| SSC CHSL (English) | 35 wpm · 10,500 KDPH | 10 min |
| SSC CHSL (Hindi) | 30 wpm · 9,000 KDPH | 10 min |
| SSC CGL DEST | 2,000 key depressions · 8,000 KDPH | 15 min |
Example
In a 10-minute English test you type 1,900 characters including spaces: 1,900 × 6 = 11,400 KDPH, or 38 gross words per minute. Against the passage you made 4 full mistakes and 6 half mistakes over 360 words, so the error is (4 + 3) ÷ 360 = 1.9% — comfortably fast and accurate. For everyday speed practice, try the general typing speed test; check your age eligibility with thegovt exam age calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is KDPH?
Key Depressions Per Hour — the number of keys you would press in an hour at your current speed. Every character typed, including spaces, counts as one key depression. 35 words per minute equals 10,500 KDPH, because one “word” is counted as five key depressions.
What speed is required in the SSC typing test?
For SSC CHSL (LDC/JSA), the required speed is 35 words per minute in English (10,500 KDPH) or 30 words per minute in Hindi (9,000 KDPH), typed for 10 minutes. The SSC CGL Data Entry Speed Test asks for 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes (8,000 KDPH). Always confirm the rules in your current notification.
How are mistakes counted?
This test follows the common skill-test method: a missing, extra or wrongly typed word is a full mistake, while a word that differs only in capitalisation or punctuation is a half mistake. Error % = (full + ½ × half) ÷ words of the passage you covered × 100. The allowed error percentage is set by each notification and can differ by category.
Can I practise Hindi typing here?
Yes. Choose a Hindi passage and type using the Hindi keyboard of your phone or computer (for example Inscript or a Remington-style layout set up in your operating system). The checker compares Unicode Hindi text word by word.
Is backspace allowed?
In most SSC typing tests the backspace key works, but some exams and practice styles disable it. Untick “Allow backspace” to train for the stricter format.
